Ongoing regeneration

 The term “regeneration” simply means “new birth.” In regeneration, the Holy Spirit imparts new spiritual life to us as He works in us to make us new creations. This work of the Holy Spirit in our lives is Sovereign. It is not something we can do for ourselves. It is the work of God alone by which we are born again—not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh,

nor of the will of man, but of God.

When we are regenerated or born again, we are given new life—eternal life. This new life is a work of the Holy Spirit in us that we could not do for ourselves. It is the gracious work of God in our lives that we receive when we put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior. As we trust in Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to live in us and transforms us into new creatures. When the Holy Spirit regenerates us, He also grants us the gift of faith by which we repent of our sins and put our trust in Jesus Christ. We are born again and given new life—eternal life— when we trust in Christ as our Savior.

The work of regeneration is a Sovereign work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is not something we can do for ourselves. We are born again by the grace of God when we put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior.
